The Kona Odyssey – an epic race or a stunning ride?

A good, tough marathon throws up some good, tough challenges. If these events were easy, I doubt they’d be as popular. And I don’t reckon crossing the finish line would feel nearly as exciting. I normally get chills. The challenges of the Kona Odyssey – a 100km race that starts on the Great Ocean Road and finishes with so much flowy singletrack riders consider moving there for good – nearly had me beat.  My usual optimistic approach to riding must have stayed in bed that morning, and I spent the first 30km of the event reminding myself why sitting down on the side of the track was probably a bad idea.Continue reading “The Kona Odyssey – an epic race or a stunning ride?”

Netti Phoenix Helmet

Any Aussie standards approved lid should do the job when you come off the bike, but one that fits well will be a pleasure to wear while you’re on it.  Problem is, given the number of helmet breaking crashes some mountain bikers tend to have – myself included – the cost of replacing a light, comfortable helmet tends to add up.  Netti’s Phoenix helmet (previously released under the ‘Cinettica’ name) takes some popular features from lids at the pointy end of the market, but has assembled them in a package that leaves less of a dent in your wallet.Continue reading “Netti Phoenix Helmet”

LineBreak Women’s Performance Compression Tights

In a sport like cycling, the fitter you get the longer and more frequent training rides tend to become. As such, it’s easy to forget the importance of recovery in making the performance gains you’re after. LineBreak products assist recovery through compression after exercise, reducing muscle vibration during sport and by helping with temperature regulation whenever they’re in use.  For me, they also help to create behavioural changes that improve these benefits further.  Not only are they an incentive to get out of sweaty, filthy lycra sooner than ‘normal’, but they also encourage me to stretch for longer and more often – something that’s easy to put off if skinny-legged denim is the first dish on the post-ride menu instead.  Fortunately LineBreak’s Women’s Performance Compression Tights also fit underneath my city-girl jeans meaning I can wear the tights for longer and heat my jeans up in winter.Continue reading “LineBreak Women’s Performance Compression Tights”

New Team, New Sponsors, New Year

When the MarathonMTB.com website first hit my radar I was inspired by and attracted to the way the site and it’s associated race team celebrate mountain biking as a lifestyle: the exciting races on offer, the adventures people have there and the frequent stories they share about these experiences on the web. I wouldn’t have believed it if someone had told me at that time that I’d end up riding with such a formidable crew in 2012.Continue reading “New Team, New Sponsors, New Year”

Biking Victoria

Buller. Forrest. Beauty. Beechworth. The Youies…Places I’ve long dreamed to experience by bike but never quite got there.  It was clearly time for a good, long holiday – one that takes in all these places and then some.  My partner and I therefore spent the first three weeks of January completely exhausting ourselves with a healthy dose of Victorian MTB tourism.Continue reading “Biking Victoria”
