How do we learn to trust our bodies as we explore a new skill? What does this process feel like as we experience it in challenging and unfamiliar situations? How can we scaffold it, encourage it? What are the roles of other bodies in helping us to trust our own? · Kristina Brümmer, pictured, and I have been exploring these questions on the trapeze and at weekly handstand classes at @themovementacademy. Research on skill emphasising constant progression needs to reflect this." 🤸‍♂️🤩 · An excerpt from my talk yesterday 'The dynamic experience of embodied expertise' at a workshop on Minds in Skilled Performance at University of Wollongong. · I shared some of my fieldwork learning the trapeze and spoke about the importance of considering complex real-world case studies in challenging or high-pressure situations when researching all the incredible things a human body can do. (A lot of philosophy and psychology research on skill uses quite simple case studies, like putting a golf ball in a lab.) · It was an excellent and thought-provoking day with a hugely interesting mix of people thinking about thinking.
