Bicycle Garage/Merida Bikes Demo Day

Keen to test a light carbon Merida 0.9 hardtail, or a bouncy 120 rig with five inches of travel back and rear?

The Bicycle Garage bike shop and Merida Bikes are hosting a demo day out at Yaramundi, near Springwood, in two weekend’s time.  If you’ve never  ridden a mountain bike before, but have been curious to know how it feels to corner on the dirt, or roll over the bumpy stuff with a plush front end, consider coming along.  Likewise if you love your current bike but are curious to see how some well-known trails feel under a different set-up.Continue reading “Bicycle Garage/Merida Bikes Demo Day”

Women’s MTB Chat Recap

Last month I wrote about an upcoming Women’s MTB Chat Session which was to be held at the Mont 24 Hour Race.

If you’re interested in reading a short recap of the ideas that exchanged minds, follow this link to a discussion thread on the Silent Revolution site.  And while you’re at it, have a look around the rest of the site.  It’s one part women’s MTB forum and one part celebration of how much chicks dig bikes.  Personally I think a site like this, and the energy coming out of it on bike tracks and at events, is one of the most positive developments in Aussie women’s riding I’ve ever seen.  Go girls!

A Radical Video From the Mont 24

Dan Mackay, 1/6th of the amazing Radical Lights team I rode with at the Mont, has put together this short video from the event.  I like the way it shows the atmosphere around camp and gives a good idea of the changing trail conditions throughout the 24 hours of the race.  It was filmed with an iPhone – can you believe it?!  Click below to relive the glory of the Mont or – if you missed the 2011 edition – to get a taste of the fun awaits at next year’s event!

2011 Mont 24 Hour Race

You can’t have an amazing Mont experience without having an amazing team to share it with and it amazes me how many times I’ve hit the 24 hour jackpot. This year I teamed up with Dan Mackay, Kevin Wells, Jason McAvoy, Paul Traynor and Brad Morton to race for Radical Lights in the Mixed Six category. We entered as a ‘fun’ team, meaning our emphasis was on enjoying the trails and not destroying ourselves racing for every extra second, although fast legs, awesome attitudes, quick night laps (due to exceptional Radical night vision) and a whole lot of 24 hour racing experience meant we quickly found ourselves on the sixed mixed leader board.Continue reading “2011 Mont 24 Hour Race”

Popular Entertainment Studies – Vol 2, No 1

The Popular Entertainment Studies eJournal applies an interesting range of theoretical perspectives to the broad spectrum of entertainment.  A new issue of the journal has been published which includes a paper I wrote on the impact of spectators on the experience of mountain bikers at community level events. It is exciting to see this work sit in conversation with explorations on other forms of entertainment, particularly those which lie within the performing arts.Continue reading “Popular Entertainment Studies – Vol 2, No 1”
