MarathonMTB.com Affiliation

If you are already a regular reader of the MarthonMTB.com site, you’ll notice that race reports from this site are now being shared with a wider audience through their site. With a focus predominantly on marathon and stage racing, and the lifestyle that comes with repeat assaults on these challenging events, I like the way the MarathonMTB crew bring a personal sense of cohesion to the broad, international marathon racing scene. Their calendar is a one-stop place for planning international riding adventures, and the regular articles on long races from around the world bring excitement to your computer screen whether you’ve just returned from an off-bike adventure, or you just feel like reading about one from your lounge room.

In the short term, this means that the stories I write after events can be shared with a much wider audience, which is great news for sponsors, and, alongside the magazine work I do, is an exciting way for me to share thoughts that come from my research in a form that’s readily accessible to mountain bikers.  I’m also hoping to team up for travel or  racing with some members of the MarathonMTB.com race team to add and extra dose of logistical ease and pre-race excitement to adventures near and far.  In the longer term, I’m looking forward to seeing the site continue to evolve in response to a healthy readership and a thriving race scene and, quite frankly, feel very flattered to be involved.

Bill + The Bike Park

The rumours are true.  Sydney has a mountain bike park, and it’s not just any mountain bike park: it flows, challenges, encourages and inspires.  And if that’s not enough, the contrast of the white, banked turns with the lush greenery of Ku-ring-ai Chase National Park is a view that can make you forget to breathe.

While the park doesn’t officially open for another month, Bill Hatcher was keen to shoot the North Wahroonga trails and skills park in its shiney freshness. I was lucky to join Nic Learmonth and Melanie Bell last Sunday in front of the lens. A few photos are below that show the big, bermy XC track and the skills section located above it.

Enduro – Issue 19

I’ve stepped back a bit this issue to concentrate on finishing my PhD thesis but have really enjoyed seeing the amount of good writing rolling in from our other contributors. Andy Blair shares some of the training techniques that compliment on bike miles, Brett Bellchambers provides his thoughts the anti-training approach to world domination and I found myself penning a column about the fun I’ve been having on my road bike lately (gasp!). Alongside a stack of other content, hopefully the new issue is a healthy antidote to rainy days and cold morning starts.  It’ll be hitting stands from Monday. Enjoy!

A Radical Video From the Mont 24

Dan Mackay, 1/6th of the amazing Radical Lights team I rode with at the Mont, has put together this short video from the event.  I like the way it shows the atmosphere around camp and gives a good idea of the changing trail conditions throughout the 24 hours of the race.  It was filmed with an iPhone – can you believe it?!  Click below to relive the glory of the Mont or – if you missed the 2011 edition – to get a taste of the fun awaits at next year’s event!

Popular Entertainment Studies – Vol 2, No 1

The Popular Entertainment Studies eJournal applies an interesting range of theoretical perspectives to the broad spectrum of entertainment.  A new issue of the journal has been published which includes a paper I wrote on the impact of spectators on the experience of mountain bikers at community level events. It is exciting to see this work sit in conversation with explorations on other forms of entertainment, particularly those which lie within the performing arts.Continue reading “Popular Entertainment Studies – Vol 2, No 1”
